WEEK THREE This week, students received instruction on computer-aided design program ArchiCAD from ArchiCAD professional Rick Pernell and Ecosa faculty Tom Hahn. The program allows students to create 3-D models of their designs which can be used to produce perspective and elevation diagrams as well as sun and shade studies based on a site’s latitude. Students also practiced using a tool called a Suntracker to determine the amount of sun and shade available on a particular lot, taking into account potential blockages like trees, landforms and other structures.

Above: students learn to use a Suntracker and the surveying transit in the background, Mister Saguaro continues to inspire the students' design of their Spirit of the Wilderness event (see the invitation under 'latest news'), and a student receives assistance on ArchiCAD.
Below: Ecosa director Tony Brown takes a side trip with students to tour a mixed-income townhouse development in Phoenix. Desert Mission Neighborhood Renewal has asked Ecosa students to assist in the selection of sustainable materials for the buildings interiors.
