This Week at The InstituteWEEK TWO

This week, students created 10 x 10 inch cubes and reinvented them, without adding or taking away any material, as sculptures. The cubes will be turned into house designs to which the students will apply the sustainable design concepts they are learning. Also this week, students began sketch classes with an exercise lead outside by faculty Tom Hahn. They will practice their new skills by producing perspective and axonometric sketches of their cubes.

Above: Two cube sculptures (left and right) are reviewed by students and faculty, and a wrapped egg (center) gets dropped to test its packaging. None of the eggs survived the drop, prompting director Tony Brown to congratulate the students: “This means it wasn’t your design but your care that kept your eggs whole while you were out in the wilderness!”

Below: The students continue to reflect on their orientation trip in the Sonoran Desert and are in the process of designing their Spirit of the Wilderness event to be held next Friday, February 8th.
