Zwillinger Residence
Rhonda Zwillinger is an artist living with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, a condition which makes her painfully sensitive to many of the materials and environments surrounding the rest of us everyday.   A move to rural Paulden, Arizona, freed Rhonda from many of the toxins found in more urban areas but still required her to exhaustingly investigate each material that created her home.   For several years she has been living in a house that, while meeting her health needs, does not match her artistic sensibilities.   Ecosa students explored design solutions that would help Rhonda breathe a new life into this space.   After intense research and design collaboration the team developed a plan for a three-phased addition and renovation turning her existing house into a vibrant, open, and climate-responsive home and studio.

In the proposed plan, a light-filled kitchen and convenient storage spaces find their ways into the existing building while new bedroom and office spaces create additional living room and a more welcoming entry sequence.	This perspective illustrates the home as it would be seen from the driveway with the roof of the proposed addition reaching out to visitors.
The addition complements the existing house with a parallel roofline offset from the existing roof allowing the winter sun to enter through clerestory windows and passively heat the home.
