Hatcher Road
We were asked by the Hatcher Road Committee of Desert Mission Neighborhood renewal to create a plan for Hatcher Road one of the main thoroughfares through the Sunnyslope neighborhood. The goal of the project is to improved the traffic circulation, encourage walking and biking and to make the street a destination location in north Phoenix. This was a challenge as the street is currently an traffic dominated industrial commercial corridor. Our solution was to develop an overlay zoning that would add density to the street and provide shade, and pathways to encourage multimodal traffic. The use of roundabouts was a solution to congestion at the many major intersections. Since completing this proposal the City of Phoenix is working with the committee to develop the overlay zoning and the roads department is currently designing the first of the roundabouts proposed by Ecosa students.
